Coffee Does More than Keeping You Active
Espresso, cappuccino, latte, mocha or flat white, we all know how great coffee
tastes, but did you know that there are many potential health benefits to
drinking this great beverage? For many years, health professionals warned us
about the varied negative side effects of a regular coffee habit such as an
increase in blood pressure or an increased risk of heart disease but recent
professional medical and health studies are beginning to turn these myths on
their head.
It goes without saying that you should enjoy your favourite treats such as your
coffee hit in moderation but study after study has failed to prove links between
regular but moderate coffee drinking habits and an increase your risk of any
serious illness.
As a matter of fact, studies suggest that a moderate consumption may actually
have a number of health promoting properties. One very recent study in The
American Journal of Clinical Nutrition goes so far as to outline that some level
of coffee consumption may reduce the risk of developing type II Diabetes. There
are too many studies undertaken worldwide in this important commodity to list in
one article, but it would appear that evidence suggests that coffee consumption
can help lower your risk of Parkinson`s disease, strokes, some cancers including
prostrate and liver cancer and Alzheimer`s disease as well as help improve your
long and short term memory and prevent gallstones. Not bad from a drink you can
fit into a very small cup!
In addition to these disease fighting properties, coffee has been shown to lower
your blood glucose level and increase the number of `good bacteria` in your gut.
These studies also found that pesticide free or organic and freshly ground beans
made the brew with the most health giving properties because, as an additional
benefit, these beans appeared to confer the benefit of keeping both brain and
muscle tissue younger. That said, it was reported that adding cream and sugar to
your daily cup diminishes these vitality boosting values. As another plus point,
darker roasted blends appear to have more `beneficial compounds` than lighter
roasts.
And that`s not even to mention the social benefits you get from meeting with
friends in your local hangout, be it at home or a cafe bar, to relax, laugh,
catch up and chat.
